A Practical Guide to Using Compound Fertilizers in Farmland

Correct application of compound fertilizers directly improves crop performance and reduces environmental losses. Follow these principles for efficient and safe use.

First, choose the right formula. Balanced 15‑15‑15 fits general crops and basal dressing. High‑N formulas (such as 30‑5‑5) support leaf and stem growth in maize, rice, and sugarcane. High‑P formulas benefit rooting and flowering, while high‑K formulas boost fruit swelling and stress resistance in potatoes, tomatoes, and fruit trees.

Second, apply at proper timing and depth. Most compound fertilizers work best as basal fertilizer incorporated into soil before planting. For topdressing, apply beside rows and cover with soil to prevent volatilization. Avoid direct contact with seeds or roots to prevent salt injury.

Third, control rate and frequency. Over‑application causes nutrient leaching, soil acidification, and pollution. Use soil test results to calculate rates. Combine with organic manure to enhance soil structure and long-term fertility.

Finally, store properly. Keep bags dry, ventilated, and away from moisture and direct sunlight to preserve nutrient stability.
